VOIP in detail

VOIP stands for Voice over internet protocol. It's bacially a protocol that allows voice transmition over the internet, it like using a telephone, but over the internet. It converts analog voice signals into data packets and supports real-time, two-way transmission of conversations.
It's used a lot of the time without people knowing. Two of the main uses would be for skype / msn and online gaming such as xbox live, the psn network and the Wii. It's also used in apples new 'facetime' and is now a feature on facebook chat.

One of the best examples of VOIP would be Skype. Since 2003 Skype has gained over 521 million accounts with over 190 billion skype to skype minutes haiving been used.

VOIP is used for commercial, public and private uses, depending on the consumer.
Most people use VOIP for comunicating with people around the world, as it costs a lot to use a telephone line to call another country. Companies would use it to contact around the world, but it may also save them money on their phonebill as they can comunicate via the internet they would already be using.
